Every artist has their own way of getting into the songwriting mindset, and for Dylan Chambers it’s imagining his life with a time machine. “I imagine myself going back in time to pitch a song to James Brown or the Spinners,” he chuckles. “I’m bummed I was born too late to experience that moment in music.” But rather than stop there, the LA-based singer-songwriter uses that retro funk lean to launch himself into a technicolor modern soul pop sky. Chambers’ new EP, For Your Listening Pleasure! (due May 17th), features seven exuberant tracks brimming with magnetic charm and sincere swagger.

Music has been a constant throughout Chambers’ life, in its highs and lows. His mother was a former Broadway actress who continued doing theater and acting as a vocal coach and his stepfather was a guitarist. Fueled by that lineage, Chambers uses his instrument as a way to express himself in the joyous times and as an escape in difficult days. “I'm trying to alchemize a lot of the pain that I've gone through into making it positive for myself and for other people,” he says.

Euphoric clap-along lead single “High (When I’m Low)” epitomizes that mindset. A collaboration with GRAMMY-winning songwriter Aldae, producer Stefan Lit, rapper LunchMoney Lewis, and jazz saxophone hero Dave Koz, the track emphasizes the need to climb your way out from under the gloom. Like fellow retrofuturists Silk Sonic and Leon Bridges, Chambers knows exactly when to play to the classic sound and when to pull in his own unique flair. “I get high when I’m feeling low/ It helps me forget/ All of my shit/ So I’m gonna go and get high,” he grins, a chorus of backing vocals ringing in the anthemic chorus.

Second single “I Can Never Get Enough” opts for a smoky, low-tempo push and a horn-drenched profession of love. “Baby I’ve/ Looked everywhere to find some peace of mind/ The world without you can be so unkind,” Chambers croons over what could be a lost ‘70s era Temptations hit with modern R&B percussion. The giddy “Let’s Keep On Dancing” showcases that determination in a sublime burst of openhearted enthusiasm, Chambers soaring over staccato horn section bursts and swirling strings.

Throughout For Your Listening Pleasure!, Chambers delivers songs that match his time-traveling mindset yet feel entirely present. True to the EP’s title, these seven tracks chase sparks both through their cathartic, soulful pop and through Chambers’ inspirational ability to build thrilling moments out of everything life throws. “Whenever I'm feeling down, I want to do things that bring me joy rather than completely go downhill,” Chambers says. Lucky for the rest of us, we can just take another spin through For Your Listening Pleasure! to do just that.
